Week 5

Outside!

A break in the weather allowed us to start taking them to the outdoor puppy area. With a bigger area to play, they started running, galloping, and tumbling much more. There are few things cuter to look at and watch than puppies this age. They are so playful and so full of life. And a couple of them just started the puppy play bow. 💓

Fighting:

At this age their teeth get long enough to to yield some yelps and angry sounding fights between the puppies. Puppies are often seen practice fighting the air with no object in sight, growling, darting, and jumping. They make me laugh a lot, because it looks pretty funny how they practice being fierce.

Bite Training:

The puppies are getting schooled in bite by the older dogs. Bite training started on their 4 week birthday when puppies bit Maya hard and it was met with a stiff sharp growl and walking away, leaving the puppies hungry and wanting. A repeat of that scenario happened several times a day every day. As soon as Maya exits the scene, Gloria usually enters. She’s always smiling and wagging as she meets the puppies, and she is meeting the challenges of these growing puppies. Earlier in the week, Gloria was covered in puppies biting her ankles, ears and muzzle, and when she gently nipped/ gnawed a couple of them, they backed off without yipping or crying and they just stared off, looking totally perplexed and trying to figure out what had just happened. Having Gloria and Rex to help train and socialize the puppies has been so helpful. The older dogs are willing to train, and the puppies seem to be willing to learn.

Going Home:

I’ve gotten some requests for what is needed/recommended for bringing puppy home.

In a nutshell, puppy will need:

Food & water

Food dishes (won’t outgrow)

Bed (outgrows quickly if small sized)

Enclosure x 1-2

Toys

Collar and/or harness (outgrows quickly)

ID tag (never outgrows)

Leash (won’t outgrow)

Car travel ability

Tons of time, love, and training

I’m working in a blogpost with specific thoughts & recommendations for these things which will be out this week. Upcoming families:

I’ll be in contact this week to set up appointments to meet your puppy and also to bring your puppy home. Health and safety guidelines will be forthcoming.

Weights:

At 5 weeks old today puppies weigh 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 pounds.
