The puppies turned 5 weeks on Tuesday (Yesterday). This past week is hard to describe. In her Puppy Culture series, Jane Killion said that four week old litters sound like a raptors nest, and like wild wolves. That sounds about right. They have huge mouthfuls of teeth. They gnaw on everything and especially on each other. Yelps and growls are often heard as they challenge, wrestle, and bite each other. Nobody has ever drawn blood or injuries that I can see. They just are learning where the lines are drawn between welcome play, and learning how much is too much; where it’s not fun anymore. They are learning bite inhibition, and that’s a good thing!
Maya continues to wean the puppies away from nursing. It’s a slow wean. She wants to spend time with them and play with them. But 11 heat seeking milk missiles seem to ambush her and continue gaining access, not fully content with only social time with Mom. So the puppies probably get about 25% Nutrition from Mom, and get the rest from about 5+ pounds of dog food per day. Puppies all weigh 6 1/2-8 pounds on their 5 week birthday.
