The 4th Week

Writer's picture: bennettgoldensbennettgoldens

This past week the puppies have begun to pounce and attack toys. It’s really cute to see them focus on their target, drop low, wag, and pounce. Sometimes their target is my hand when I am reaching in to pick up a sibling. They standardly grab the object (they already show very soft mouths/bites) and they shake their heads side to side. They are practicing characteristics that they would use as hunting dogs, for which the Golden Retriever was bred to be from the beginning. They are not retrieving yet. I appreciate their soft mouths! When we first introduced teething toys, most of the puppies didn’t play with or chew on them. They preferred to chew on wire gate and on their bed. Kinda reminded me of how babies often times like to play with the box more than the toy gift received. But now they love their chew toys.

Our focus this week has been foremost on helping them potty train and working with their rhythms to get get full meals, good play time, and solid sleep. We remain working with them on noise habituation & manding as well.

Maya continues to feed them (i would say 25-50% of their nutrition), train them, and socialize them as well. Puppies are growing well and now weigh about 5-6 1/2 pounds.
