A tremendous amount goes into preparing for a litter. Maybe some time I’ll write about preparing for breedings, but we are past that on this cycle! Maya is pregnant by Bailey. Her belly is getting large, she can feel puppies moving, and occasionally I can feel one or two give a light kick or turn as I gently press my hand on her belly. We’ve seen puppies moving on ultrasound and seen high heartbeats by fetal Doppler. We’ve been dealing with morning sickness, food aversions, getting up in the middle of the night because of needing to go potty more, being hot and wrestless, or because she’s nauseas. She’s seeking out small spaces in the house. A whelping box is set up which she likes to go into, but she currently prefers to stretch out in open spaces or lay down on cool surfaces. Soon she’ll start digging outside, and in the weeks ahead, we’ll have another litter of puppies. Linens are being washed and equipment procured and made ready ahead of the birth. It’s kind of like getting ready to have a baby and bring it home, only it’s more like 10+ babies! I can hardly wait to hold puppies again!
