Countdown: Two weeks!

Maya bred to Bailey again, and puppies are expected to be born around New Year’s Eve! What a way to bring in the new year!

We’re way past all of the early jitters of wondering if she conceived. It seemed pretty likely when she started having a hard time eating, and her belly started appearing thicker! Her girth has grown much quicker this time. Much like human pregnancy, she goes through weeks of morning sickness where I have to get creative in offering foods that will keep her and Her puppies well nourished.

Here she is, looking thicker in her belly, and looking kinda nauseas. Dog pregnancy lasts 9 weeks. She’s now solidly in her 3rd trimester, is growing a huge belly, and is really slowing down. Whereas she spent a couple of weeks with a voracious appetite, now puppies crowding her lung and stomach capacity make it challenging to eat big meals or do normal exercise. Now her daily desire to exercise and retrieve is met with a much gentler and abbreviated version of it. She’s even more snuggly than usual, and she spends most of her day now resting and growing puppies.

We brought her whelping box in last weekend and set it up in our room. She entered the box, smelled it thoroughly and looked at me and wagged.

A good night’s sleep for she and I is becoming more challenging as she now wakes up most nights somewhere between 1-3am just wanting a little cuddle date with me. I’ll likely be up all through the night with her in a couple of weeks as dogs usually deliver puppies in the wee hours of the night. So we are getting ready! Whelping supplies are getting cleaned and on hand.

Yesterday I felt a puppy move and kick for the first time, which was so fun! More fun for me than Maya! It’s a good thing Maya welcomes me to rub and feel her belly because it’s a regular thing throughout the day, hoping to keep making connections with the puppies and comfort my girl!
